5:00 pm: YES - Be Bold, Be an Explorer, Be a Maker

May 17 May 19

Be Bold, Be an Explorer, Be a Maker
Friday, May 17th - Sunday, May 19th

At LightHouse, we value the importance of innovation and the accomplishments of blind makers. Hence, this May, we are excited to invite 20 youth (14 and older) who are blind or low vision to attend the Be Bold, Be an Explorer, Be a Maker weekend program occurring in collaboration with the Youth Employment Series (YES) May 17-19, 2019 workshop!

The LightHouse Be Bold, Be an Explorer, Be a Maker workshop will be a packed weekend of hands-on experience for blind and low vision youth interested in the maker movement. The weekend will include a guided daylong trip to the Maker Faire in San Mateo, opportunities to connect with blind makers, crafters, and artists, as well as an immersive weekend filled with hands-on activities and projects. We appreciate a generous grant from Oracle enabling us to offer full scholarships to cover fees for a limited number of participants who are currently not signed-up with DOR. So register early and do not miss out on this incredible experience! The deadline to register is May 10, 2019.

Maker Faire Is a celebration of the Maker Movement, a showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness. The Bay Area’s Maker Faire is the largest Maker Faire in the nation, right in the heart of Silicon Valley in Northern California. Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is a gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students and commercial exhibitors. “Makers” come to Maker Faire to show and share what they have made and what they have learned.

Starting on Friday, May 17, a group of 20 enthusiastic students will stay at the LightHouse student residences where they can support each other as they explore the broad array of projects and potential career fields makers engage in throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, May 18 students will travel as a group to the Maker Faire for guided tours with volunteers and blind/low vision mentors. Volunteers will accompany students in pairs to describe the projects showcased at the various booths, and potentially visit booths of blind makers.

The exciting weekend will conclude on Sunday, May 19, where students will participate in tutorials, workshops and presentations with blind mentors who are makers themselves. They will offer hands-on demonstrations, exhibit their own work, and provide tailored guidance and consultation.

12:00 pm: Superfest Showcase at the Roxie Theater

May 18

Emmy Award-winning director Jason DaSilva continues the documentation of his diagnosis with multiple sclerosis and its aftermath. WHEN WE WALK, the follow-up to DaSilva’s 2013 film WHEN I WALK and part of a documentary trilogy, is bracingly forthright and political in this film about inequalities that parents with disabilities face.
His previous film documented the first seven years after his diagnosis and launched a platform for his AXS lab and map, which provide information about accessible locations worldwide. The new film tracks DaSilva’s daily struggles as the father of a young child in an environment where the healthcare system is stacked against him. As his health continues to deteriorate, DaSilva exposes the many inaccessible spaces and systems that able-bodied people take for granted.
Co-presented by: 3rd i South Asian Film Festival, Asian American Donor Program, Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum, BAVC, LightHouse for Blind and Visually Impaired, Richmond Are Multi-Services, Inc. (RAMS), SF Film
Wheelchair seating is limited at the Roxie, but more available at the Kabuki screening, so please rsvp if you require it to Anna Xian. Audio description, live captioning, and ASL are available upon request for the Roxie screening. Please contact operationsassistant@caamedia.org by May 15, 2019 so we can plan accordingly.

3:00 pm: Foundation Fighting Blindness Young Professionals Meeting

May 18

Are you a young professional in the Bay Area impacted (or know someone who is) by low vision? We are a group of individuals affected by retinal degeneration diseases and we would love for you to come meet up to chat, share stories, network and discuss other events. We look forward to meeting you!

Our next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 18 from 3 - 5 p.m. We will be meeting at the LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired at 1155 Market St 10th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94103 in the Conference Room (room 1040) on the 10th floor.

Feel free to RSVP directly on our Facebook event page.

Our goal is to meet every other month. We are open to any "young professionals."  Of course, that is fairly subjective, and as of now we just hope that those who want to attend are either "young" (Denny's qualifies those "55+" as "senior" so "young" means "those who cannot receive a Senior discount at Denny's") or a "professional" (anyone with a job and who is affected by an inherited retinal disease).  Anyone who is interested in the group, or wants information on upcoming meetings can visit our Facebook page ("Foundation Fighting Blindness Bay Area Young Professionals") for more information, or email FFBBayAreaYoungProfessionals@gmail.com.

(All day): Bay to Breakers 12K

(All day)
May 19

"A quintessential San Francisco experience since 1912, the race is interwoven into the fabric of the city and is a true reflection and celebration of life between the breakers and the Bay.

As participants progress throughout the course, they will pass through nine neighborhoods, each with distinctive personalities, geography and landmarks. The course is designed to deepen your love and appreciation for the city.

Start point at San Francisco Bay, blocks from The Embarcadero, running west through the city. Finishing at the Great Highway where breakers crash onto the Pacific Coast’s Ocean Beach."

The LightHouse has a goal to create a centipede for this race. A centipede is a group of 13 or more who race together. Let's make the LightHouse shine bright through the city of San Fransisco on May 19th! Are you in? RSVP deadline is April 22nd. Whether you knit for pleasure, distraction or just practical economics, or you’ve never done it before and want to give it a try, there’s always room for another loom. Learn, refine, or teach a skill that makes your gift-giving budget lighter weight or support a student-led altruistic project like knitting chemo caps, beanies for babies, lap blankets or other creative applications.

10:00 am: Knitting

May 30

Every week, our knitters gather to share their purls of wisdom and get in the loop on each other’s latest project, and usually end up in stitches spinning yarns.

Reading Roundup

The pleasure and power of reading cannot be overstated. Whether you are drifting off to a beloved story from childhood, studying a new and fascinating subject, keeping up with the latest political news or on the edge of your seat while trying to determine “Whodunit,” books and reading free you to explore whole new realities. In the past, Blind people have found that their options for accessing books, newspapers and magazines were quite limited. However, recently our options have increased exponentially, and now offer us much greater access to the entire Rainbow of Reading materials.

Join us from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on May 30th at the LightHouse Headquarters to explore your options. We will discuss both accessible mainstream content, as well as options from long-time providers of books to the blind and print disabled. Following the discussion, we will be available to assist you in accessing the services that suit your needs.

Topics will include:
• Bookshare
• OverDrive/Public Library books
• Library of Congress BARD
• Kindle
• Newsline
• VitalSource Bookshelf
• Audible
• And more!

The workshop is open to all, but an RSVP is required. To RSVP email ahogan@lighthouse-sf.org or call 415-694-7343. This class is free to participants through support from the City of San Francisco’s SF Connected program.
