From Scholarships to Job Applications: Compiling Your Toolkit for Success

In April, join the LightHouse Youth Employment Series, YES, workshop focusing on the importance of preparing oneself prior to arriving for a job or scholarship interview and how best to compile your toolkit for success. Students will have the experience of completing a job application, drafting resumes, learning about cover letters, and practicing interview skills all while connecting with their peers. YES workshops are monthly weekend-long learning experiences emphasizing the vocational enrichment of low vision and blind youth, providing access to a multifaceted array of mentorship, employment readiness skills, and alternative accessible techniques.

The YES Workshop in April will support students so they can confidently arrive to an interview prepared to highlight their strengths and explain their assets. Students will build their toolkit for success by enhancing their understanding of how to complete job or scholarship applications, learn and draft resumes and cover letters, as well as apply their newly acquired knowledge in mock interviews. The weekend is spent learning from blind and low vision mentors and engaging in creative hands-on activities which further support youth to explore and achieve their individualized and professional goals.

Workshop Learning Objectives:

  1. Participating youth will have the opportunity to engage in job and career exploration and learn the necessary steps needed to prepare for job interviews in a variety of industries. They will gain an increased understanding on the latest trends employers use when evaluating resumes for internships and jobs.
  2. Youth will gain valuable information on post-secondary and comprehensive transition program resources and application processes. They will receive information on creating brag sheets and personal essays to prepare for scholarship and college applications.
  3. Participants will learn and practice job readiness soft skills and employer expectations such as effective communication and teamwork, punctuality, highlighting your strengths, interview etiquette, and have crucial discussions regarding the importance of independent living skills required to be successful in the workplace.
  4. Transitional age youth will also elevate their attitude and confidence from meeting with successful blind mentors who have extensive experience in the areas of searching and applying for scholarships and jobs.
  5. Participating students will gain perspectives on disability disclosure, self-advocacy, and understanding their rights during the application and interview process.

Things to Bring:

  1. A notetaking device or implement (braille note, pen, slate and stylus, phone with keyboard, laptop, etc.)
  2. Necessities you may need such as money for transportation to and from the workshop or personal medication.

If you are interested in participating in the April YES Weekend Workshop, please contact your Department of Rehabilitation counselor to discuss workshop attendance and authorization. If you have any questions or would like to pay for your participation in the workshop, please contact Ann Wai-Yee Kwong, Transition Program Specialist, by email at youth@lighthouse-sf.org or by phone at 415-694-7328. Each workshop costs $950 to attend for the entire weekend.

Please note, space for this program is limited to 15 students and workshop attendance must be confirmed one week prior.

What is Qi Gong? Think of Qi Gong as a “moving meditation” addressing the “whole” for stress reduction & self-care, which benefits both physical and emotional health, and includes the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of a person, as well as the person’s integration in the world they live in. Qigong is not exercise -- it is dynamic meditation where doing repetitions is not the focus. The conscious application of the three intentful corrections: lengthen the spine, deepen the breath, clear the mind or visualize healing, which can be done sitting, lying down, standing or moving. Join our instructor Dale Mirmow (Ren Xue of the Americas, Level 2 Yuan Gong Training Level) weekly in this dynamic form of moving meditation and discover the health benefits that await you.

10:00 am: Blind Arduino Workshop

May 12

Targeted toward introducing blind and low vision people to Arduino, participants will learn the basics of using Arduino hardware and software non visually, electronics basics, and come away with a kit of accessible supplies and measuring tools so you can start your own projects! This workshop series is run as part of Josh Miele’s Blind Arduino Project.

Arduino is a hardware and software platform that allows people to build and customize objects with introductory knowledge of electronics and coding. Popular uses of Arduino can be found in DIY smart home devices such as thermostats that adjust temperature according to the time of day, or lights that turn on and off automatically depending on the light levels outside. Arduino offers possibilities for blind and visually impaired people to customize smart home devices that might otherwise be inaccessible, and to make accessible measuring tools for completing DIY projects more independently.

  •      Where: San Francisco Lighthouse, 1155 Market St. 10th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94103

Participation in both workshops is not required.  However, participation in only the second workshop requires introductory knowledge of Arduino hardware and software.

Donations accepted; participation is free. However, everyone will receive $100 in supplies. Please donate as you are able. If you already know how to use Arduino, contact us via the registration form to learn how you can volunteer. This workshop series is part of a research project. Participants will have the opportunity to opt in to the study but enrolling in the study is not required.

Maker Faire Is a celebration of the Maker Movement, a showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness. Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is a gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students and commercial exhibitors. “Makers” come to Maker Faire to show and share what they have made and what they have learned.

Starting on Friday, May 18 a group of 25 enthusiastic students will stay at the LightHouse student residences where they can support each other as they explore the broad array of projects and potential career fields makers engage in throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, May 20 students will travel as a group to the Maker Faire for guided tours with Oracle volunteers. Volunteers will accompany students in pairs to describe the projects showcased at the various booths, and potentially visit booths of blind makers.

The exciting weekend will conclude on Sunday, May 20, where students will participate in tutorials, workshops and presentations with blind mentors who are makers themselves. They will offer hands-on demonstrations, exhibit their own work, and provide tailored guidance and consultation.

10:00 am: Knitting

May 24

Every week, our knitters gather to share their purls of wisdom and get in the loop on each other’s latest project, and usually end up in stitches spinning yarns. Whether you knit for pleasure, distraction or just practical economics, or you’ve never done it before and want to give it a try, there’s always room for another loom. Learn, refine, or teach a skill that makes your gift-giving budget lighter weight or support a student-led altruistic project like knitting chemo caps, beanies for babies, lap blankets or other creative applications.

For more info, needle Adult Program Coordinator Serena Olsen at solsen@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7316.
