(All day): Woodworking with Wurtzel

(All day)
Feb 1 Feb 4

It is the beginning of George Wurtzel’s dream to bring in masters of their field, to come teach classes in the Tactile Art Center. Once again we are raising the bar for what blind people can expect, what they can accomplish, and that they can rise to the top of their field; given the right training. This session we will have Jerry Kermode come in and instruct woodturning along with George Wurtzel.

In spite of the Napa fires, we will still have this amazing, informative, and imaginative session at Enchanted Hills Camp. Please join expert George Wurtzel for another wonderful workshop for beginners, intermediate, and experienced woodworkers. The workshop will be for four days in the beauty of Napa. This class will mainly focus on woodturning. Woodturning is a form of woodworking that is used to create wooden objects on a lathe. This method differs from most other forms of woodworking in that the wood is moving while a stationary tool is used to cut and shape it. Many intricate shapes and designs can be made by turning wood. We will continue to explore hand tool work, power tools, accurate measuring without sight; using click rules, gauge blocks, Vernier calipers, and talking tape measures. We will also continue to discuss different wood types, construction and finishing techniques.

Please apply to this workshop using the following link below:

1:00 pm: Love Yourself, Love Your Yin: Yin-Yoga Workshop

Feb 24

On the last Saturday in February, join us in LightHouse’s top floor yoga studio for a two hour yin-yoga workshop focused on self-care in the new millennium, led by our brand new Health and Wellness Program Coordinator, Amber Sherrard.

What: Yin-yoga workshop

When: Saturday, February 24, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: LightHouse’s fitness room and yoga studio

With cell phones, computers, and technology all around us, demands on our attention can be stretched thin. In this day-and-age, self-care is often the last thing on our minds. February is the month of love and you deserve to love yourself. Yin Yoga focuses on the connective tissues of the body through postures that are held in stillness and mindful awareness. It is the perfect complement to any self-care routine. Yin Yoga addresses tightness and toxin buildup in the joints and connective tissue through poses that are equally challenging for the mind and body. The result is not only more lubricated and flexible joints, but also a greater sense of balance, peace, and calm. Come and learn to love yourself and love your yin!

Have you already received basic skills training in orientation and mobility, access technology or independent living and are committed to focus more intently in a minimum of three of these skill areas in a small group and/or individual learning environment? Changing Vision Changing Life may be for you.

This motivating five night session is designed for students who may have had training in the past or have participated in CVCL Immersion at LightHouse and are now focused on practicing the skills they’ve learned in a more intensive and structured manner. It takes place at our Urban Campus Student Residence in San Francisco, which means your training will be incorporated into the environment of a vital urban city.

  • Smart Cooking for Independence
  • Low Vision Training – Using your Tools to Your Benefit
