10:00 am: Disability Contingent: Oakland Women's March

Jan 20

The Community Services team is expanding our presence and growing community in the East Bay. This year, LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired is spearheading the Disability Contingent, joining women and community allies in the Women's March Oakland taking place on Saturday, January 20th.

The Women’s March Oakland’s mission is to “harness the political power of diverse women and their communities to create transformative social change.” This is not a political march, but rather a community march that aligns with LightHouse's mission to promote equality and self-reliance for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Inspired by the article "Disability Rights Are Conspicuously Absent from the Women’s March Platform," the LightHouse team took initiative to join the organizing committee.  The Women’s March Oakland is committed to removing systems of oppression through nonviolent resistance and building inclusive structures guided by self-determination, dignity, and respect.

The Women’s March Oakland is for anyone who believes women’s rights are human rights; all are welcome regardless of ability, age, gender, or gender identity.  We look forward to you joining us on January 20th because women's rights are human rights.

We'll meet at the parking lot located at 40 10th St., Oakland. For more detailed instructions, contact Laura Millar (contact information below). Rally starts 10:00 a.m. and tentative start of the March after the Rally will be 11:30 a.m.

For more information on how to participate in the disability contingency, please contact Laura Millar at lmillar@lighthouse-sf.org or (415) 694-7345.

If you would like to volunteer for the disability contingency, please contact Allyson Ferrari at aferrari@lighthouse-sf.org or (415) 694 – 7320.

(All day): Orientation & Mobility Immersion Program with Guide Dogs for the Blind

(All day)
Jan 22 Jan 26

The main objective of Guide Dogs for the Blind's Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Immersion Program is to assist people wanting to work with a guide dog to develop those O&M skills most relevant to guide dog mobility. In this exciting program, GDB partners with the LightHouse and O&M professionals to offer the Immersion Program.

During the six-day course, based in our residential facilities in Downtown San Francisco, clients receive an average of 25 instructional hours in O&M skills with a 1:1 student/O&M instructor ratio. Each O&M specialist has undergone training with Guide Dogs for the Blind to prepare them to instruct students who have a guide dog mobility goal.

Since the skills taught during the course are aimed to assist clients to travel independently with a guide dog, they involve less tactile input than cane travel. The skills covered in the course include:

  • Increasing awareness of environmental information
  • Developing an understanding of how to use auditory information like traffic sounds to remain oriented and to achieve correct alignment during general travel and street crossings
  • Teaching how to use auditory information to analyze different types of intersections and determine the best time to initiate street crossings
  • Developing the ability to estimate the distance walked relative to the time taken (time-distance estimation)
  • Maximizing the use of residual vision (if applicable) through proper scanning techniques and developing an understanding of how residual vision can impact guide dog travel

Visit the GDB website for more information or please contact Orientation and Mobility Services Manager Marc Gillard at mgillard@guidedogs.com or 800-295-4050, ext. 4061.

Leslie McNeil of Vanda Pharmaceuticals will be joining the LightHouse on Friday, January 26 from 6-7 PM and again on Saturday January 27 from 10-11 AM to inform us about non-24 Circadian sleep-wake disorder.

Please join us for one of these opportunities and bring all your burning questions about Non-24 Circadian Sleep-Wake Disorder to our knowledgeable representative from Vanda Pharmaceuticals January 26 or 27.  RSVP to Adult Program coordinator Serena Olsen at solsen@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7316.

(All day): Woodworking with Wurtzel

(All day)
Feb 1 Feb 4

It is the beginning of George Wurtzel’s dream to bring in masters of their field, to come teach classes in the Tactile Art Center. Once again we are raising the bar for what blind people can expect, what they can accomplish, and that they can rise to the top of their field; given the right training. This session we will have Jerry Kermode come in and instruct woodturning along with George Wurtzel.

In spite of the Napa fires, we will still have this amazing, informative, and imaginative session at Enchanted Hills Camp. Please join expert George Wurtzel for another wonderful workshop for beginners, intermediate, and experienced woodworkers. The workshop will be for four days in the beauty of Napa. This class will mainly focus on woodturning. Woodturning is a form of woodworking that is used to create wooden objects on a lathe. This method differs from most other forms of woodworking in that the wood is moving while a stationary tool is used to cut and shape it. Many intricate shapes and designs can be made by turning wood. We will continue to explore hand tool work, power tools, accurate measuring without sight; using click rules, gauge blocks, Vernier calipers, and talking tape measures. We will also continue to discuss different wood types, construction and finishing techniques.

Please apply to this workshop using the following link below:

https://form.jotform.com/72545928294165

If you have any questions or need support with filling out the application, please contact Taccarra Burrell at tburrell@lighthouse-sf.org or 415-694-7318
