11:00 am: Select the Right Tech

May 8

If you’re blind or visually impaired, finding the right piece of access technology can be a big, and sometimes daunting, undertaking, but knowing what options can meet your needs is the first step.

Back by popular demand, here’s a chance to see first hand the latest and greatest in access technology. We’ve invited a variety of access technology vendors to come show you magnification, Braille displays, hand held devices, apps, and more. You can browse the vendor tables, compare devices, and ask questions.

While you’re here, chat with a LightHouse technology specialist to get tips on selecting the right technology to meet your individual needs, and learn how you can receive training on your access technology here at the LightHouse.

For questions, or to RSVP, contact Shen Kuan, skuan@lighthouse-sf.org or (415) 694-7312. Invite your friends and bookmark the event on Facebook.

*LightHouse offers space for vendors to show their products to the blind community, but vendor participation in this event does not imply Lighthouse endorsement.*

11:30 am: Safe Streets – Second Crossing at 18th/Castro

May 9

Our second intersection crossing for Safe Streets is at 18th and Castro. Safe Streets is part of the Vision Zero initiative, which aims to lower the number of pedestrian-related deaths within San Francisco to zero. A few staff members and ten mobility ambassadors, all of whom are blind/low vision cane users, will be crossing this intersection for about an hour to create visibility and awareness of blind/low vision pedestrians to the many sighted pedestrians, drivers, and cyclists that come by there. You are welcome to join us!

10:00 am: Knitting

May 10

Every week, our knitters gather to share their purls of wisdom and get in the loop on each other’s latest project, and usually end up in stitches spinning yarns. Whether you knit for pleasure, distraction or just practical economics, or you’ve never done it before and want to give it a try, there’s always room for another loom. Learn, refine, or teach a skill that makes your gift-giving budget lighter weight or support a student-led altruistic project like knitting chemo caps, beanies for babies, lap blankets or other creative applications.
