JOB PURPOSE:

The LightHouse for the Blind is looking for an energetic and innovative Transition Program Specialist to help shape the future of the LightHouse Youth Program. With over 100 employees and an annual budget of $12.5 million, the LightHouse has the resources and imagination to help change the lives of the blind and low vision transitional youth population of the greater bay area and beyond.

One of San Francisco’s oldest and best-known philanthropies, we recently began operations in our brand-new state-of-the-art headquarters on Market Street, where we’ll   coordinate volunteers, big tech, teachers, families, students and a caring staff together to design and build new ways to help people who are blind and visually impaired.

As part of the LightHouse Community Services department, the Transition Program Specialist will be responsible for planning, coordinating and supervising programs and activities for blind and low vision transitional youth between the ages of 14-26. The Transition Program Specialist will be youth-oriented, flexible, computer literate and in possession of strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills to relate to a diverse array of people. The Transition Program Specialist will report to the Director of Community Services and work with a variety of LightHouse staff, volunteers, parents, educators and other community constituents to develop LightHouse programming that will increase participation amongst the blind and low-vision youth community.

The principal focus of this position is to create and nurture programs which serve students through the California Department of Rehabilitation, with special emphasis on the pre-employment transition services program, mandated by the US Department of Education, which reserves funds for transition-aged youth.

The position requires regular weekend work and occasional evening work. The Transition Program Specialist needs to be experienced in creating, coordinating and supervising recreational, educational and mentoring activities.

This position may also require participation in LightHouse activities not related to youth programming at the direction of the community Services Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A. degree in a relevant field such as special education, child development, counseling or recreational therapy
  • Must possess at least one year direct experience working with youth (transition-aged students preferred)
  • Comprehensive knowledge on the latest trends impacting the blind and low vision community as well as a general understanding of the blindness community (e.g., alternative skills blind and low vision people use to work, travel and participate as every day citizens of their communities.
  • Must be a Competent and effective user of the Microsoft suite, including Outlook, Microsoft Word and Excel

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A. degree in a relevant field such as special education, child development, counseling or recreational therapy
  • Possess three to five years direct experience working with youth
  • Current certification in First Aid and/or CPR
  • Basic knowledge of how the Department of Rehabilitation works
  • Basic knowledge of local school districts (TVI and O&M)
  • Bilingual (Spanish, Mandarin, ASL)
  • Experience with social media
  • Braille literate

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Regular weekend assignments; occasional evening assignments; must be able to carry or transport 20lbs; able to sit at a desk and perform computer-intensive work for long periods of time; operate standard office equipment; travel independently.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

The LightHouse Transition Program Specialist will:

  • Be responsible for all aspects of transitional youth programming at the LightHouse and in the community;
  • Develop programs which meet the 5 required, and 9 additional services of the Pre-employment transition services program. These include:
    • Job exploration counseling
    • Work-based learning experiences, which may include in-school or after school opportunities, experiences outside of the traditional school setting, and/or internships
    • Counseling on opportunities for enrollment in comprehensive transition or postsecondary educational programs
    • Workplace readiness training to develop social skills and independent living
    • Instruction in self-advocacy
  • Coordinate and supervise youth program participants;
  • Collaborate with LightHouse staff and volunteers on projects, assignments and tasks;
  • Coordinate teachers, volunteers and public speakers to facilitate youth and transition activities;
  • Inspire active student participation for all sponsored programs and events;
  • Encourage transitional youth to use non-visual techniques regardless of their level of vision;
  • Assist in writing and proofreading the monthly LightHouse Youth Newsletter;
  • Process and record program service fees and authorizations;
  • Enter data regularly into Salesforce in a timely manner and maintain clear and professional student records within the database;
  • Maintain student confidentiality;
  • Outreach to, and recruitment of, local and statewide blind student populations;
  • Conduct themselves in a professional manner on and off the job, knowing that they are representatives of the LightHouse;
  • Demonstrate efficient time management and the ability to prioritize assignments;
  • Consistently report to work on time and be ready to begin performing assigned duties and responsibilities;
  • Provide First Aid or CPR if necessary;
  • Attend staff meetings and departmental briefings as requested;
  • Continue to learn and communicate a blindness-positive philosophy;
  • Other duties may also be assigned or re-assigned according to candidate’s skill set.
